Choosing Fonts: Serif vs. Sans Serif

By KJ

When building your website, be sure to choose common fonts that are likely to be installed on your readers computers. There are a lot of cool fonts out there, but what's the point of using a cool font if very few of your readers' computers will register it?

Fonts fall into one of two categories: serif or sans serif. Serif fonts have lines that finish the main strokes of letters. Sans serif fonts do not such embellishments. I strongly recommend using sans serif fonts. They are much easier to read online.

Still confused about serifs? See Webopedia's serif definition and diagram.

Common Web Fonts:
Sans Serif: Verdana, Arial, Impact
Serif:
Times New Roman, Georgia, Courier New

To find more information about web fonts and samples of the fonts listed above, go to Microsoft.com's Recommended Fonts page.
