Write shorter paragraphs for the Internet

By KJ

Like it or not, people are inherently lazy. They don't read, they skim
. This is especially the case in cyberspace.

Keep in mind that the majority of your site's intended audience are people hunched over their computer screens in clumsy office chairs. Combine that with the fast-paced nature of the Internet, and the results yield a restless, impatient, time-pressed group of people.

For this reason, it is a good idea to break up lengthy paragraphs into shorter ones. Long paragraphs, as well-written as they may be, can be a major turnoff for many people. Short paragraphs come across as much less threatening.

For instance, take a moment to skim over Example 1 below. Then glance at Example 2. Which composition do you think you'd be more likely to read? Both examples are identical in content, but most readers would favor Example 2, because it is much less threatening and much more visually appealing.

Example 1

Hotlinking is when you directly link to another website's images so that the images will appear on your site. As a result, you don't need to store the image on your own server. But on the flip side, you also use up a portion of the other site's data transfer, or bandwidth. The reason why using up someone elses bandwidth is problem, is because web hosts charge by bandwidth, and if a site goes over the monthly allotment of data transfer, the host will charge an additional fee or take the site offline. Not surprisingly, this leaves many webmasters feeling shortchanged.
