Random Star Wars Thoughts

Every now and then I will post my aimless musings about Star Wars here.

09/24/05 - Oh, the Irony
The term "only" is an absolute. The word commands exclusivity and finality. For example, in The Phantom Menace, Anakin remarks in reference to lightsabers, "Only Jedi carry that kind of weapon." In other words Anakin is saying that any old bum does not carry a lightsaber, just those who are a part of an exclusive group; just the Jedi Knights.* There is no room for argument. You can't kind of be a Jedi. There is a very definite line. You're either a Jedi or you aren't. You're either in the club or you're not. End of story. It's as simple as that.

What strikes me a being a little funny is that in Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan says to Anakin, "Only a Sith Lord deals in absolutes." Obi-Wan is simultaneously admonishing and dishing an absolute. No wonder Anakin became so confused and conflicted! :P

* Most likely young Anakin did not know about the existance of the Sith Lords. Even if he did have any prior knowledge about the Dark Side lightsaber wielders, he probably would have bought into the common belief that the Sith had been extinct for over a millennia.

03/09/05 - ROTS: Marketing Mishap?
I remember one of my first thoughts after seeing the title Revenge of the Sith was, "Hey , this is going to be abbreviated ROTS." That initially sounded like a terrible mistake to me. Then I got thinking about it, and went off on a little tangent in my head, as I often do. In Revenge of the Sith, the Republic is decaying, or "rotting" away. An abbreviation that spells "rots" only enhances and reinforces the events that will occur in the movie.

I'm sure others have thought about this, but I just felt like sharing my little epiphany with the world.

02/21/05 - Buying the Original Trilogy Non-Special Edition
I just picked up the Original Trilogy non-Special Edition VHS at a Half Price Books store yesterday. It's funny, A New Hope and Return of the Jedi were both on clearance for $3.00 each, but I had to pay $4.99 for Empire Strikes Back. What's up with that?

Still, I figure getting the Original Trilogy on tape for under twelve bucks isn't too bad a deal. I probably could have gotten it slightly cheaper on eBay, but heck I'm a loyal Half Price Books customer. Besides, the tapes were right there in front of me.

02/07/05 - Does Anyone Speak Italian?
A while back I found an Italian message board discussing Star Wars. The odd part is that someone links to a picture on this site. Anyway, I just thought that was kind of funny. Apparently, the posters are having some kind of discussion going about Kit Fisto and other beings found in the Star Wars trilogies. I don't speak Italian, though, so I can only hope that they're saying good stuff about my man Kit.

11/13/04 - Action Fleet Naboo Starfighter Bargain
I haven't bought many Star Wars collectibles lately, but yesterday I found an Action Fleet N-1 Naboo Starfighter on clearance for $6.50. How could I pass up a deal like that? So I bought it, brought it home, and put it on display on one of my shelves.

I've always had a bit of an affinity for Naboo Starfighters. Their design is so sleek and elegant. I probably would have liked a different color better, though. Yellow is just too...yellow, in my opinion.

11/04/04 - Star Wars and Roman Numerals
I wonder how many kids have learned their Roman numerals from the Classic Trilogy? People often get the numbers IV and VI mixed up, but if kids get IV associated with A New Hope (Episode Four), and VI associated Return of the Jedi (Episode Six) then they're likely to be able to consistently correctly distinguish the two.

10/17/04 - Dark Side Tongue Twister
I challenge you to try saying "Sith socks" five times fast. I can't even say it twice, but then again, tongue twisters have never really been my thing.

9/24/04 - Drink Blue Milk, Lose Weight
Luke sips at a tall glass of blue milk in A New Hope, probably unaware that his drink may be the reason that he's not feeling very hungry.

The color blue naturally puts a damper on a person's appetite. Why? because blue food is rarely found in nature. Thus, when early human ancestors were foraging around for food, blue was a color that set off a warning signal of a potentially deadly food item.

So perhaps Luke's scrawny build (at least in A New Hope) is thanks, at least in part, to his dinner beverage. Got blue milk?

9/23/04 - Stormtrooper Armor

Every year an army of devoted fans suit up in glistening, white armor and fan out at various conventions and events. Some of the events are Star Wars related, and some are not. What ever the occasion, the armor clad fans evoke feelings of awe and wonder in passersby.

The stormtrooper costumes are not without a dark side. From what I hear, they're uncomfortable, get hot easily (even the suits that have a fan or two installed inside), and are a bit pricey (the figures I've seen average at about $1000). Despite the drawbacks, stormtroopers have proven to be one of the most popular Star Wars costumes around.

9/21/04 - Classic Trilogy Memories
The Star Wars Trilogy DVD Collection is released today. I remember having a burning desire to go see the Special Edition movies in the theatre in 1997.* All of my friends had seen them. To this day I'm not sure what happened, but somehow I never got around to seeing them. I did get a poster of Wicket with my Pizza Hut kids meal, though. I still have the poster too...somewhere.

*I did not become a Star Wars fan until late 1999, several months after the theatrical release of The Phantom Menace.

09/19/04 - Typing "Star Wars"
Did you know that a person only needs his/her left hand in order to type "Star Wars" on a standard keyboard? Try it. I discovered that tidbit of info about a year ago, but I haven't found the opportunity to put it to good use. Until now.
